orgI work with businesses all the time which are struggling with their employee programs and benefits.  It’s something you know you have to do in order to be seen as a solid employer and retain your folks.

But it’s so easy to get mired down in all the details!

The details are important, sure, but you can lose your way.

It’s critical to keep in mind the big picture, the Big Why.  Why are you doing this program in the first place?

  • Retaining your talent
  • Motivation
  • Focusing on the top priorities
  • Because it’s the right thing to do
  • Attracting the right people
  • Moving toward a healthier organization

There can be myriad valid reasons, but for any program you need to focus on the top one or two.  Then structure your program in such a way as to optimize the achievement of those goals.

And, by the way, doing something because you competitors are doing it is the weakest reason.  If that’s all you have, then search out something better.  Because copying your competition by definition is putting you behind.
